Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Niju Kun values in developing the discipline character of karate athletes in Gorontalo City. Karate is currently developing not only as a traditional martial art, but also as a competitive sport that requires athletes to master techniques, maintain discipline, and internalize ethical and philosophical values. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were 15 senior high school karate athletes, consisting of 9 male and 6 female athletes aged 15–18 years, selected through purposive sampling based on active participation in training, at least one year of training experience, willingness to be interviewed, and continuous involvement in karate coaching. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model with the assistance of NVivo for coding and thematic organization. The results showed that Niju Kun values were implemented in five aspects of discipline: attitude and ethics, time and responsibility, mental discipline, training behavior, and technical discipline. The most dominant aspect was attitude and ethics, appearing in 15 athletes or 100%, followed by time and responsibility in 13 athletes or 86.67%, training behavior in 12 athletes or 80%, while mental and technical discipline each appeared in 10 athletes or 66.67%. Future research is recommended to examine other character values such as responsibility, sportsmanship, confidence, and emotional control.
